Seeing My Son Differently Outside of School

This camping trip helped me see my older son a little differently. He seemed more relaxed. I saw him listening to his friends and having conversations with them, and that stood out to me. It made me wonder whether some of his struggles at school come from not sharing the same interests as his classmates. He also seems to feel that some of them are more focused on being better than each other than simply having fun. Of course, the trip wasn’t perfect. Sports were still challenging, and there are things he needs to work on. But I also saw a side of him that can get lost when I’m focused on what’s going wrong. It reminded me that he’s a good kid. Sometimes, as a parent, I get so caught up in correcting his behavior that I forget to notice everything he’s doing right. Seeing him more comfortable made me realize how much his environment matters—having space to feel accepted, connect with others, and grow as a person. My lesson this week is to pay closer attention to what helps him feel comfortable and connect. I still want to teach him to listen, respect others, and handle frustration. I also want to understand him better and help him find places where he can be himself while continuing to grow.
